Sacramento Kings: Three things to watch for as the season comes to a close
You be surprised to find out that Buddy Hield is an incredibly good shooter. Even more surprising, Buddy Hield is closing in on the Kings’ history books with his shooting prowess.
Barring an incredible and unfortunate turn of events, Buddy Hield will be the record holder for single-season three-point field goals made and attempted. Hield, who is hitting 3.4 threes per game on 7.8 attempts, is just 11 made threes behind current single-season record holder Peja Stojakovic, who hit 240 threes in the 2003-04 season.
If Hield continues at his current pace of made threes, he’ll pass Stojakovic this week, with the moment likely to happen at home against either the Dallas Mavericks on Thursday or the Phoenix Suns on Saturday. If you want to be in-house for a bit of Sacramento Kings history, you might want to start looking at tickets for those dates.
That’s not the only history Buddy’s chasing, however, as he’s just 25 attempts behind Stojakovic’s record of 554 attempted threes in that same 2003-04 season. Funny enough, based on his averages, it’ll also be about 3.2 games before Hield breaks that record as well, meaning that the two game stretch against the Mavericks and Suns will likely see both records fall to Buddy Buckets.
Should Buddy close out the season playing every game and hitting at least 3.4 threes per game, he’ll also finish the 2018-19 season with around 280 made threes; good enough for sixth all-time in NBA history. If he hits slightly above his per game average, he could eclipse Steph Curry for fifth all-time with 286 made threes in the 2014-15 season. Even if Buddy doesn’t get that far up the all-time NBA ranks, he’s almost assuredly setting the Kings’ single-season record, and that’s a good enough reason to watch, for us.
