Sacramento Kings: Reviewing The Team’s Offseason Actions
What Does The Future Hold?
Will the Kings make a splash in the next few days? It seems possible. I think the Temple trade was a precursor to another move. Will they extend an offer sheet to Clint Capela, or fulfill my dreams and pursue Marcus Smart? If the Kings were able to sign one of those two, their approach to free agency will be regarded in a positive light by most, including me.
Then again with this much cap space, I hold my breath every time I see a Woj notification pop up on my iPhone. Hopefully, they are not enamored with Rodney Hood. Hood is another injury prone one-way player who has showcased an inability to contribute to winning basketball. Hood finished 502 out of 521 NBA players in ESPN real plus/minus rankings (one spot ahead of De’Aaron Fox (503)).
Another option would be to absorb a bad contract and buy a player out. Carmelo Anthony is an option on this front. He would never wear purple because the Kings would buy him out and leave him free to sign with another team. The benefit would be other assets acquired in the trade from Oklahoma City. Two future first-round picks should be the demand.
Other cap-strapped teams with players on bad contracts are the Washington Wizards (Ian Mahinmi), Portland Trail Blazers (Meyers Leonard), or the Houston Rockets (Ryan Anderson). If the Kings are unable to lure Capela or Smart to Sactown, then Vlade should be working the phones with these teams trying to absorb one of these bad salaries and gain a future first-round pick(s).
