Trading The Second-Round Pick

The Sacramento Kings traded their lone second-round pick in the past draft for two future picks and cash considerations. The Portland Trail Blazers acquired the rights to Duke guard Gary Trent Jr. with the 36th selection.

The truth is that the Kings are not good enough to not make selections. I am watching the summer league semifinal matchup of the Los Angeles Lakers and Cleveland Cavaliers, and Sviatoslav Mykhailiuk is lighting up the scoreboard with 31 points while shooting an impressive 6/11 from three. Svi was picked 47th overall. Svi may be better than Kings’ forward Justin Jackson, and they should not be overlooking talents like Mykhailiuk for future picks.

They also passed on De’Anthony Melton who is, in my opinion, an upgrade over Frank Mason III (Mason is a third-string point guard in my opinion). Lastly, they passed on forward Keita Bates-Diop who could have provided much needed defensive versatility.

Maybe the acquired future picks will be the needed sweetener to pull off an upcoming trade to acquire a 2019 first-round pick, but as we speak passing on those talents was a poor decision.
