Sacramento Kings: Reasons To Target Jamal Crawford
By Rafe Wong
Here are my reasons why the Sacramento Kings should consider Jamal Crawford in free agency.
Another day in free agency, another day where the Sacramento Kings are not making moves. Although I believe that Vlade Divac and company should not sign players just to say they were active this offseason, I do think there is still talent left in the market that can help Sacramento next season. One of these guys is Jamal Crawford.
I know, I know. Crawford is a two-guard which means he would create a logjam for Sacramento at the position. But with that being considered, I do think he would be of value for the Kings going forth. Here are my reasons why.
Scoring Ability
Last season, Sacramento averaged 98.8 points per contest which ranked them dead last in the league. Although the young Kings are talented, it is uncertain how efficient they will be on the offensive end this upcoming year. Having a guy like Crawford can add some insurance.
Even at the age of 38, Crawford has the ability to handle the ball and create his own shot which can be huge for the Kings when they face offensive ruts. I do not expect Crawford to be an asset for all 82 games, but I do think he has enough left in him to light up the stat sheet from time to time.
Veteran Presence
The Kings and their fans have seen how impactful a veteran presence can be towards the young guys. What better veteran to have than Jamal Crawford?
Throughout his career, Crawford has earned a reputation of being a high-character guy. So adding him to the mix would be good for Sacramento’s young core as they can learn from a player who has had wild success in his career.
Just think of Crawford’s potential role with the Kings similar to Vince Carter’s when he was with the team last season. A respected veteran who will not play every game, but will spread valuable knowledge to the youth year round.
Final Thoughts
Overall, I think the idea of Sacramento signing Jamal Crawford could benefit the franchise. Sure, Crawford would clog up the shooting guard spot, but it is not like he will play every game due to the current stage of his career.
Instead, I see him mainly being a veteran towards the young guys on the team and will occasionally get time on the hardwood when the Kings need an offensive spark.
I think if Sacramento were to offer Crawford a one-year deal worth around $8-10 million, they can lure him to California’s capital.
Kings fans. What do you think of the idea of your team going after Jamal Crawford? To express your thoughts on the issue, feel free to comment on our website, Facebook page, or Twitter account.
