The Sacramento Kings selected Gary Trent Jr. in the second round of the 2018 NBA Draft before trading his rights to Portland, and we grade that decision by Sacramento.

The Sacramento Kings filled a need by selecting skilled Duke big man Marvin Bagley III with the second overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft.  They are hoping Bagley III becomes a superstar and their centerpiece.  He should definitely get buckets and rebounds in Sacramento next season.

The Kings had a selection in round two at 37 overall, and they decided to draft Bagley’s Duke teammate Gary Trent Jr. but moved him to Portland shortly after the pick.

Trade 2nd round: 37th overall traded for two future second round picks

Trade grade: C

Reaction

The selection of Gary Trent Jr. looked like a curious one for a minute by the Kings, but they choose to have two future second round picks from Portland instead.  Trading one pick for two is usually good business for a rebuilding team, but the Blazers figure to stay in contention over the next few seasons meaning Sacramento now has two late second round picks likely on their hands.

There were a few players that had the look of solid role players still on the board, and the Kings should have kept the pick and selected one.  That is why this trade receives a C grade.
