G-League increases player’s pay: A move to attract talent?
By Tyler Watts
The G-League, the NBA’s developmental league, announced it plans to increase player’s wages next season. A look at why that could improve the talent.
The G-League made plenty of headlines on April 17. First, the Sacramento Kings got clearance from the city to move their affiliate to Stockton, California. You can read more about that story here. The league itself then announced some big news. Below is a Tweet from Darren Rovell detailing the news.
What the news means
That means the players will make more money next season. $35,000 for a season does not seem like a lot of money, but one-and-done players make $0 playing NCAA Basketball. Could this open the door for more players deciding to play a year in the G-League and then entering the NBA?
It seems like the first step. The better talent the league can secure, the more fan interest which turns into more dollars for everyone involved. I expect this just to be the opening move in a series that attempts to make the G-League’s talent pool significantly better. Keep an eye out for the domino effect this has on the league in the coming season.
Final thoughts
The NBA’s G-League increased the player’s salaries on April 17. Participants will now make $35,000 over the five-month season. It will be interesting to see if it helps the league attract some of the top talents. Most will likely go the traditional NCAA to NBA route. The way to get these top high school players to the G-League is through pay increases, so stay tuned for further developments.
