Mission “Upset Golden State” Was Unsuccessful For Sacramento Kings

SACRAMENTO, CA - FEBRUARY 2: Klay Thompson
SACRAMENTO, CA - FEBRUARY 2: Klay Thompson

A terrible second half by the Sacramento Kings led them to lose to the Golden State Warriors by a score of 112-96.

Well, the hope that the Kings would take the season series over the Warriors will remain a dream as the purple and black were defeated by a score of 112-96. With this win for Golden State, the season series will end with a 2-2 tie.

Game Summary

The score will not show it, but the Kings were competitive to start last night’s contest. The first quarter was particularly entertaining as the ability to move the ball well and make jump shots were displayed by both teams, ending the period with a Warriors’ 28-25 lead. Although the Warriors outplayed the Kings in the second, Sacramento was still able to play well which put them behind by only eight points going into halftime.

Once the second half started, it became a nightmare for the Kings. The Warriors continued to be efficient while the Kings’ collective play started to decline on both ends. It started with an abysmal third quarter where the Kings were outscored 36-20, and it carried on into the fourth where both clubs started to play their deep reserves to run the rest of the clock off.

Final Thoughts

Yesterday’s performance by Sacramento started out great, but the star power from Golden State (even without Stephen Curry) was too much to handle for them for all four quarters. For the game, the trio of Draymond Green, Kevin Durant, and Klay Thompson combined for 60 points, 13 assists, and 21 rebounds.

As for Sacramento, despite them being dominated in the second half, I thought there were some positives to take away from their play. Specifically, the core of De’Aaron Fox, Bogdan Bogdanovic, and Buddy Hield played solid as they combined for 46 points, 16 assists, and 10 rebounds. Willie Cauley-Stein also had a nice night as he recorded 12 points and eight rebounds.

Although this game will go down as a loss for Sacramento, their youth was able to perform well which makes last night’s game somewhat encouraging towards Kings fans.

The next time Sacramento hits the hardwood will be today as they face off against the Los Angeles Lakers.
