NBA Mock Draft 2017: Sacramento Kings win No. 5 overall

The Sacramento Kings moved up to No. 5 overall in the NBA Draft lottery.  This article details why the Kings will select De’Aaron Fox at that pick.

I have been saying for weeks that May 16’s NBA Draft Lottery could be a franchise-altering night for the Sacramento Kings.  They faced a future with two top ten overall selections or none.  The lottery was kind to the Kings moving them up to number five overall and maintaining the tenth overall selection.

Today, we will take a look at the number five overall pick and examine why the Kings should select De’Aaron Fox with that selection.

No. 5 Overall

The Sacramento Kings select behind the Boston Celtics, Los Angeles Lakers, Philadelphia 76ers, and Phoenix Suns.  I project that those teams will pick Markelle Fultz, Lonzo Ball, Josh Jackson, and Jayson Tatum in that order.

That leaves the Kings with a plethora of options at the number five overall pick to fill their two clearly defined needs.  They need a point guard of the future, and they need a two-way wing player.

Why De’Aaron Fox

The Sacramento Kings can have their pick of the next three point guards in the draft.  I believe they select Fox because he fills a need and has superstar potential in the NBA.

De’Aaron Fox is a fun player to watch.  Fox is a 6’4 point guard who possesses game-changing speed.  He lacks long distance range at this stage in his career but uses that speed and quickness to penetrate to the basket and finish.  You can view his pre-draft workout and interview below to get a feel for De’Aaron Fox as a player and a person.

I believe Fox is the right pick for the Kings because he has the highest upside of any remaining point guard at pick five and he could just be the player that leads Sacramento back to the playoffs.

Final Thoughts

The draft lottery turned into a great night for the Sacramento Kings.  They secured picks five and ten overall.  With pick five, they will be able to select a great young talent that could change the fortunes of their franchise.

I will be championing for De’Aaron Fox all the way until draft night.  I think he is their point guard of the present and future.  He is also the type of player that could lead the Kings back to the playoffs.  Get it right Kings Management and select Fox at pick five.
