Ty Lawson will be an unrestricted free agent this summer. Should the Sacramento Kings re-sign him or let him walk?

Despite struggling during his 2015-2016 campaign, Ty Lawson was able to resurrect his NBA career with the Kings this season.

What made Lawson productive this year was his offense. For the season, Lawson averaged 9.9 points and 4.8 assists per game while shooting 45.4% from the floor. He continually was called upon by Coach Dave Joerger to get the Kings out of huge holes in games, and for the most part, he succeeded.

Bottom line, Lawson was a facilitator that came off the bench and did a solid job in getting players involved in the scoring as well as himself, making a good case to be the sixth man of the year for his team. But with that being said, should the Kings re-sign him to stay on board for next season?

Cop or Drop?

I think whether deciding to re-sign Lawson depends on how the Kings do in the draft. If Sacramento does draft a facilitator for their future, I would pass on Lawson because I would rather have Sacramento re-sign Darren Collison, who is also an unrestricted free agent, over him.

However, if the Kings do not decide to draft a point guard, the Kings should try to re-sign Lawson. There was not much that the Kings could be proud of during this season, but their point guard duo was a bright spot.

In my opinion, Lawson’s value should be around $5-10 million per season. If the Kings were to offer Lawson a 2 year/$14 million contract, I think it would benefit the Kings going forth. But this is only the case if the Kings do not draft a point guard or do not re-sign Collison.

Final Thoughts

Overall, Lawson was a pleasant surprise for Kings fans to watch this season, but whether the Kings should re-sign him or not depends on what type of actions the organization takes this upcoming summer.
