SACRAMENTO, CA - DECEMBER 31: Frank Mason III

Frank Mason bruised his heel on Dec. 31 and has been ruled out for the next week with the injury.  Continue reading for more information.

Frank Mason, a second-round pick of the Sacramento Kings in the 2017 NBA Draft, has exceeded expectations this season.  Mason has looked the part of an NBA backup point guard for years to come.  That is why when he fell to the court injured in the New Year’s Eve game it was a huge disappointment.  James Ham provided additional word on the injury with the following Tweet.

What the news means

When it first happened, the injury looked much worse.  The Kings and Mason are lucky that he should be back in a week.  The injury is forcing him to walk on his toes because of swelling in the heel, though.  If the only issue is swelling, then the news is about as good as we could want.

Who steps up?

The return of De’Aaron Fox in the Jan. 2 game against the Hornets did not come a moment too soon.  Fox returned to the starting lineup and figures to see plenty of action including the minutes vacated by Mason.  Frank Mason should return to the rotation once he is fully healed and continue seeing 15-25 minutes a night as the bench point guard.

Final thoughts

Frank Mason’s heel injury will cause him to miss the next week of action.  It is positive news on many fronts including the fact that the Kings only play twice this week, so Mason may not miss many actual games.  Stay tuned for further updates as they become available on Mason.
