The 2017 NBA Draft Lottery took place on May 16.  The Sacramento Kings faced much anxiety about the night, and this article details the results.

I have been championing for weeks that May 16’s NBA Draft Lottery could be a franchise-altering evening for the Sacramento Kings.  They faced a future with two top ten overall selections or none.  Now that the lottery results are in, we will take a peak and detail what the Kings do moving forward.

Their Pick

The Sacramento Kings moved up in the draft order on lottery night.  Their pick was selected to be third overall.   The Kings traded the Philadelphia 76ers the right to swap picks, so the Kings had to settle for the fifth overall selection.  A top five pick is a significant opportunity for Sacramento to secure a point guard or a two-way wing player.

New Orleans Pelicans Pick

The New Orleans Pelicans did not move into the top three and therefore owed their pick at tenth overall to the Sacramento Kings.  This pick was the result of the DeMarcus Cousins trade.  A second top ten selection is another opportunity to fill a need and grab another exciting young prospect for the Kings’ rebuild.

Final Thoughts

The draft lottery was drama filled, but a great night for the Sacramento Kings.  The Kings moved up to fifth overall and stayed at pick ten.  That means they have two opportunities to draft some young talent on June 22.

The 2017 NBA Draft could be a franchise-altering night for the Sacramento Kings.  They passed the first test by holding onto their two top ten picks.  Now Vlade Divac and the rest of the management is tasked with using the selections to improve the franchise.  Let us hope that they make that a reality on draft night.
