The Sacramento Kings right now have the 8th overall pick in this year’s NBA Draft, which means they will have plenty of players to choose from.

But which players is the right choice?

Name: Jaylen Brown

Height: 6’7          Weight: 220

Today, ARP will analyze Jaylen Brown, a freshman that played for the California Golden Bears this past NCAA season.

Statistics

In his only season at Berkeley, Brown was able to demonstrate the production and potential that he could possibly bring to the professional level. In this past season, the 6’7 forward averaged 14.6 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 2 assists per game.

Range

According to a plethora of mock drafts, the range where Brown is projected to be picked is around 4-8, so if the Kings were interested in acquiring Brown through the draft there’s a chance that he will be available to pick up when the Kings are on the clock. But should they be interested in him?

The Fit

If Brown were to rock the purple and white next season, he most likely would be the backup forward behind Rudy Gay and compete for time with Omri Casspi. He could possibly contend for the starting two-guard spot also as he has the athleticism to guard multiple positions on the defensive end.

He was a player that defended well at the collegiate level and has the ability to bring that same production to the pros, which would upgrade Sacramento’s defense which was horrid this season. He also has good athleticism and length for his positions (two-guard and small forward), which makes him a potential threat slashing to the basket and rebounding the ball.

Although he has the physical tools to become a stud in the league, Brown still has parts of his game that need to be polished. For one his shooting mechanics need some work, as he struggled shooting the ball as a Golden Bear which made him a one-dimensional player on offense. He also was turnover prone at his time at Berkeley, as he averaged 3.1 turnovers per contest.

Rafe’s Thoughts

For me, Brown is a prospect that is very intriguing. Like I mentioned above, he has the physical tools to be a stud in the league, but he needs a coach that can lead him the right direction which I think the Kings have in Dave Joerger. Overall, he is a raw prospect, and although there is a risk that he may never live up to his potential, taking Brown at #8 is a risk worth taking if I am Vlade Divac and the crew.
