Sacramento Kings host the San Antonio Spurs tonight, DeMarcus Cousins ‘doubtful’

The Sacramento Kings defeated the Memphis Grizzlies 102-90 on Wednesday night, and you could argue that it was the most impressive victory of the season. If nothing else, it was certainly the most meaningful.

The Kings had a few impressive wins under Michael Malone earlier in the season, but considering the fact that whatever Malone was building towards was torn down, it’s hard to argue against the Karl led Kings taking down the second best team in the Western Conference.

You can find our full recap of that game here.

The Kings are 2-1 in the George Karl era. The team is playing well, and they are doing it with a severely depleted point guard group.

Reports circulated yesterday that Darren Collison’s season is likely over if/when he has surgery on his hip flexor this Tuesday.

  • That leaves the Kings with Ray McCallum and Andre Miller as their point guards for the remainder of the season. I like McCallum as much as anyone, and Miller has been a great addition to the bench unit, but as a tandem, the McCallum and Miller backcourt has to be one of the least proven and least talented point guard duo’s in the NBA. That makes what George Karl has been able to put together in three games even more impressive.

McCallum is averaging 9.3 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 4.0 assists in 23.6 minutes per game as a starter this season. Those raw numbers aren’t as impressive as his .429 three-point percentage, or his .476 field goal percentage as a starter. He’s playing adequately in that role right now, but he certainly has room to improve.

This is a massive opportunity for McCallum. His play over the next couple of months is going to be fascinating to watch.

The Sacramento Kings will host the San Antonio Spurs tonight at Sleep Train Arena. The Spurs are currently riding an uncharacteristic four-game losing streak. They haven’t won since the All-Star break.

I would have been fairly optimistic heading into this game if DeMarcus Cousins wasn’t listed as doubtful for tonight. Cousins sprained his ankle in Wednesday’s win, and he’s also dealing with a left hip contusion.

The Spurs are at full strength, and they should be pretty motivated to end their losing streak. The Spurs are at Phoenix tomorrow night, so there is always the possibility that Greg Popovich will rest a few of his players with a back-to-back looming.

This was going to be a tough game with DeMarcus Cousins. Without him? Incredibly tough, but I didn’t think the Kings had a chance against Memphis the other night, so as the great Kevin Garnett once said – Anything is possible.
