According to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports, and Sam Amick of USA Today, the Sacramento Kings have finally reached an agreement with George Karl to replace Tyrone Corbin as their head coach. Karl signed a four-year contract worth just under $15 million. The contract includes a $1.5 million buyout in Karl’s fourth year.

  • Wojnarowski is reporting that Tyrone Corbin will not be part of George Karl’s staff moving forward. The status of the rest of the current Kings assistant coaches is uncertain at this time.

UPDATE: Per the Kings recent press release, Tyrone Corbin has been officially relieved of his coaching duties, but will remain with the organization as an advisor to the front office.

Earlier in the week, NBA insider Chris Haynes reported that if/when George Karl is hired; Philadelphia 76ers assistant coach Vance Walberg would be joining his staff in Sacramento. ESPN’s Marc Stein speculated that George Karl’s son and former Denver Nugget Coby Karl could join the staff as well.

UPDATE: Bill Herenda, Sacramento Kings Insider for CSN California, is now reporting that former King and current team scout Mitch Richmond could be joining George Karl’s coaching staff. Gary Payton also went on SiriusXM Radio today and announced that he would be contacting Karl soon about a potential position on the bench.

This signing shouldn’t come as a shock to anyone, as Karl and the Kings have been negotiating (quite publicly) for a few days now. I’d expect the Kings to make an official announcement as soon as this morning.

The timing of Karl’s hiring couldn’t have worked out any better for the Kings. Due to the All-Star break, Karl will have an opportunity to get a few practices with the team before he makes his season debut on Friday, February 20th in Sacramento against the Boston Celtics.

George Karl hasn’t coached since the 2012-2013 season where he won the NBA’s ‘Coach of the Year’ award for leading the Denver Nuggets to 57 wins, a franchise record. Karl is responsible for coaching the Nuggets to nine-straight playoff appearances, and ranks 6th in NBA history for regular season coaching wins (1,131).

We’ll have more on this story as the news continues to break.
