Uh-Oh! Klay Thompson Is Playing the Sacramento Kings Again Tonight

The Kings won? The Kings won! Sayonara, eight-game losing streak.

It wasn’t pretty or particularly encouraging, but this team desperately needed something to feel good about, and a road win is a road win.

The Pacers defended the Kings extremely well at times. Their defense in the second half was fantastic, but they just didn’t have the offensive weapons to hang with DeMarcus Cousins and Rudy Gay. It was a pretty predictable game from start to finish. The Kings almost handed it over to the Pacers in the end. Where have we seen that before?

I actually thought the most interesting nugget to come out of Saturday night’s win in Indiana was Derrick Williams’ DNP-CD. Is this Derrick Williams fascination finally over? Hard to say, but he had a huge spike in minutes once Ty Corbin took over, and those minutes have been slowly crashing back down until last night when he didn’t play at all.

  • I’m not rooting against Williams, but the Kings alternative option for those minutes, Omri Casspi, has done more than enough to earn his playing time. I’m not sure what Derrick Williams has done this season to earn the role he’s been in. And on top of that, Quincy Miller is a guy who should be eating into Derrick Williams’s minutes if the Kings have any intention on seeing if he can play in the NBA this season. I have a strong sense that Williams won’t be here past the trade deadline.

That brings us to tonight, where the Kings are back in Sacramento to face the Golden State Klay Thompson’s. I kid.

The good news is that this is last time the Kings will have to play the Warriors this season. The bad news is that the Kings have to play the Warriors tonight, and they’ve lost by a combined 63 points in three games this season. Yikes.

It feels like we’ve seen this game play out seven thousand times. Andrew Bogut is going to give DeMarcus Cousins a tough game. Jason Thompson is going to struggle chasing Draymond Green around the perimeter, and the Kings are going to surrender a lot of open threes to Harrison Barnes, Klay Thompson, and Stephen Curry.

Can the Kings hang with Golden State? Of course they can. Despite the lopsided final scores, the Kings have played punch-for-punch with the Warriors for stretches this season. Can they put it together for a full game? Unlikely, but not impossible. It’s their last matchup, and it’s at home. If they want to prove something to Golden State, this is their last opportunity to do so.

It’s also worth noting that this is the Kings first home game since DeMarcus Cousins was named to the All-Star team. Adam Silver, the NBA’s commissioner and the man who announced that Cousins would be on the roster, will be at Sleep Train Arena. Let’s give those guys some love tonight.

That’ll do it here. As always, check back in to A Royal Pain after tonight’s game for our postgame coverage.
