When the Sacramento Kings drafted Nik Statuskas just one season after picking Ben McLemore in the 2013 NBA Draft, questions arose about his future with the organization. It was an understandable sentiment given both players play the same position.

McLemore’s future with the Kings became even more cloudy as rumors surfaced suggesting he could be involved in trade scenarios with the Boston Celtics in exchange for Rajon Rondo, however such deals never materialized and the Kings say they remain committed to Ben McLemore moving forward.

“I told him,” coach Michael Malone said of McLemore, ” ‘Listen, we drafted Nik Stauskas. That’s not any slight on you. We still believe in you. You’re still our guy and we still expect great things from you from Year 1 to Year 2.’ I think he came out to Summer League after one year in the NBA thinking he had to score 20 points a game. It’s not about that. It’s playing the right way as we try to instill more ball movement.”

While I don’t think the Sacramento Kings are actively seeking to trade Ben McLemore, the fact remains he’s one of their few promising trade chips. He’s one of the names opposing teams will be attempting to acquire so his future with the franchise does seem questionable assuming the Kings are attempting to quickly improve their roster with trades.

Again, that’s not to say the Kings want to move Ben McLemore but when trade talks open, the former Jayhawk is going to be the one of the first names brought up by the opposing party.
