Rudy Gay picks up his option to stay with the Sacramento Kings

Yahoo Sports Adrian Wojnarowski is reporting Rudy Gay has decided to exercise his player option for the 2014-2015 season. This means Rudy Gay will officially be back with the Sacramento Kings. A move that many expected, especially considering he is set to make 19.3 million dollars in the final year of his deal.Had Rudy Gay opted out of his deal, he likely wouldn’t have seen a number close to 19 million dollars per year.

Rudy Gay opting in does not mean that a long term deal is no longer possible. In fact, I would say a longer term deal to stay in Sacramento would seem more likely. The Sacramento Kings have made it very clear that they view Rudy Gay as part of their future. The Kings and Gay could strike a deal before the season starts, but if they are unable to do so, they would likely wait until next summer to finalize any deal. The Sacramento Kings can now shift their attention to Thursdays NBA Draft and Isaiah Thomas.
