There have been rumors suggesting the Sacramento Kings are looking to bring in a point guard this offseason and according to Chad Ford of ESPN, they’ve recently been linked to Atlanta Hawks guard Dennis Schroder along with Brandon Knight of the Milwaukee Bucks.
Isaiah Thomas is a far better player than either, making the rumor seem a little outlandish.
Granted, Sacramento could be in the market for a backup point guard and both Knight and Schroder could be of use coming off the bench but neither is talented enough to supplant Thomas as a starter.
The other issue is Thomas’ pending free agency. Sacramento could be getting themselves in position for insurance if Thomas was to receive a lofty qualifying offer deemed too rich to match by the Kings, though that seems pretty unlikely given teams generally aren’t going to overpay for somebody of Thomas’ size, unfair as that may be.
Simply put, I highly doubt the suggestion (assuming it’s even true) has anything to do with Thomas outside of having a backup plan in place if he was lost in free agency.
Sacramento doesn’t need either of them and both come with their own set of warts that make me question if Sacramento isn’t just putting out smoke screens.
