Sacramento Kings interested in Alvin Gentry as assistant head coach

When the Sacramento Kings hired Michael Malone as head coach last season, the longtime assistant decided to bring his father and veteran NBA coach Brendan Malone along for the ride.

Appointed to the assistant head coach job, Brendan abruptly walked away from the position which the Kings and Malone decided not to fill.

That could change this offseason though as the Kings have reported interest in former head coach and current lead assistant for the Los Angeles Clippers.

The Sacramento Kings have also contacted Gentry about their assistant coach position, a source said. Kings head coach Michael Malone never filled the position vacated by his father Brendan a week before last season.

Gentry is no stranger to the coaching ranks, holding head jobs with the Miami Heat, Detroit Pistons, Los Angeles Clippers and Phoenix Suns. Those are of course on top of his handful of pit stops as an assistant coach.

In addition to the Kings, the Utah Jazz, Cleveland Cavaliers and Golden State Warriors are interested in Gentry though the Warriors’ interest has been reduced after the hiring of Steve Kerr. The Jazz and Cavaliers are said to be looking at Gentry for a head coaching position, unlike the Kings who would be offering an assistant role.
