A few days ago, much begrudged reporter Ric Bucher suggested that Rudy Gay is ‘enticed’ with the option of opting out of his $19 million dollar player option this coming offseason which would make the veteran small forward a free agent.
The news was met with mixed reviews, namely because it was Bucher behind the report and that’s understandable given his track record regarding Sacramento rumors.
However, Gay opting out of his contract does make sense on a variety of levels. Sure, he’s leaving nearly $20 million dollars on the table next season but he’d also (likely) be entering free agency with players like LeBron James and Kevin Love – not exactly the type of names you want to go up against. Then again, many teams have set themselves to have available cash come that time period and Gay could make a nice haul being a solid consolation prize.
If he is to opt out this coming offseason however, he’ll be one of the top free agents on the market (assuming he gets to that point and the Kings don’t re-sign him first) and stands to cash in regardless.
So how say you, A Royal Pain readers – is Gay going to opt out this season (not leave Sacramento, just opt out)? Or will he decide to honor the final year of his contract?
