Sacramento Kings will attempt to re-sign Rudy Gay if he opts out of contract

Sacramento Kings small forward Rudy Gay has quite the decision to make in the coming weeks – leave $19 million dollars on the table by opting out of his contract and sign a new long term deal, or opt-in, collect the money and be an unrestricted free agent after the 2014-15 season.

There are benefits to each as Gay isn’t going to collect $19 million dollars in an upcoming deal. That within itself might be enough reason for Gay to opt-in and stay with his current contract. Of course, if he does such he’ll likely be competing with 2015 free agents like LeBron James and Kevin Love who are sure to be more prized than Gay on the free agent market.

On the flip side, opting-out and signing a new deal will give Gay financial security moving forward and the ability to start a life in his new home, be it Sacramento or elsewhere.

Whatever the case may be, if Gay does decide to opt-0ut, the Kings will attempt to re-sign him according to Jason Jones of the Sacramento Bee.

The Kings of course hold Gay’s Bird Rights and will be able to pay the veteran more than any other team in free agency.
