During the next two days, the rumor mill will be churning in full force and a lot of strange suggestions will make their way across the wire.
Most intriguing Sacramento-based deadline story is increasingly loud buzz out there that Isaiah Thomas is available in midst of career year. Kings moved swiftly today to make it clear Ben McLemore will NOT be dealt this week but strong word in circulation is Thomas CAN be had.
Of course, everything is within context here and there’s not really a player on the Kings roster that isn’t tradeable given the right package – even DeMarcus Cousins.
That said, not to devalidate Stein in any which way, but one would assume Thomas is available – though at a relatively steep price.
It also should be noted that Stein doesn’t go on to suggest that the Kings are actively looking to trade Thomas, just that he’s not untouchable as few players are. Still, intriguing considering the source.
Personally, I don’t think there’s much weight to it – unless the Kings fear they’ll be unable to retain Thomas in free agency. But it just makes basketball sense to have an open book on any player (again, even Cousins) come the deadline. That doesn’t mean you want to trade them, but are open to it if an opposing general manager wants to overpay.
Should be an interesting few days.
