The Toronto Raptors believed Rudy Gay would exercise his $19 million dollar player option had they not traded him earlier this season, but given his recent play in Sacramento, nobody knows what Rudy Gay is going to do this offseason – not even Gay himself.
The former UConn product has been playing at an All-Star level with the Kings and opting out could secure him a hefty multiyear deal. Of course, opting out also leaves $19 million on the table.
Gay told ESPN’s Marc Stein he’s still undecided about his future:
I’m not sure. I have to go into the summer with my people, think about everything, weigh out the pros and cons. I don’t know yet. But Sacramento’s been great to me thus far. Obviously I’m trying to tune it all out right now. All I can think about right now is how great Sacramento’s been to me.
It should be noted – Gay opting out doesn’t mean he won’t return to Sacramento, just that he’s looking to sign a long term deal. Of course, if Gay does decide to opt out, that gives the Kings a handful of financial options during the offseason in regards to trades and/or free agents.
