Vivek Ranadive compares business of basketball to social network

Vivek Ranadive may have only become majority owner of the Sacramento Kings a handful of months ago, but that doesn’t mean he hasn’t completely transformed the franchise in that short window.

While improving the on-court product is a process that takes time, improving the culture and the perspective of the Kings franchise doesn’t require the same longevity as evidenced by the recent waves of publicity.

From Saturday Night Live having a skit featuring minority owner Shaquille O’Neal to constant coverage on business networks, the Kings have suddenly become a relatively hot topic thanks to Ranadive and the rest of the tech-backed ownership group.

The Kings owner recently appeared in a piece for Bloomberg News and while much of the interview isn’t exactly news to Kings fans, it’s still a nice sight to see and there might even be a few less mentioned nuggets of information, like Ranadive’s comparison of basketball business to that of a social network.

But that’s not really the point here. The point is – when’s the last time the Kings were such a hot topic? When’s the last time you saw magazine, television, radio clamoring for Kings news? And we’re not talking just local here – we’re taking national publications like the aforementioned Bloomberg.

There’s certainly a long way to go in bring the Kings back to the top of the NBA, but it’s clear Ranadive is doing just that and doing so at an expedited pace.
