Kings Reportedly Decline Jimmer Fredette's Fourth Year Option

The Sacramento Kings will not pick up the fourth and final year of guard Jimmer Fredette’s rookie contract reports USA Today’s Sam Amick.

On deadline day, I’m told the Kings have informed Jimmer Fredette of their decision not to pick up his 14-15 team option ($3.1 mil)

The Kings had until today to make a decision whether to pick up the final year in Fredette’s deal ($3.1 million). With the decision now apparently made,  Fredette will become an unrestricted Free Agent next summer.

Fredette, the 10th overall selection by the Bucks in the 2011 NBA Draft, was traded to the Kings in a draft day deal. He went ahead of players like Golden State’s Klay Thompson (#11) and San Antonio’s Kawhi Leonard (#15).

It has been a difficult road for Fredette since putting on a Kings uniform. He came into the league with fairly large expectations after averaging 28.9 points and 4.3 assists a contest in his senior year at BYU. Jimmermainia never really caught on in the NBA, for multiple reasons; he was outplayed his rookie season by Isaiah Thomas, the 60th overall pick in the 2011 draft, and Fredette never gained consistent minutes under Keith Smart in the following two seasons.

Fredette has always believed he was better suited to play the point guard position, but now finds himself third on the depth chart at both guard positions. Isaiah Thomas and Greivis Vasquez have locked up the minutes at the point, while Marcus Thornton starts at the shooting guard spot with rookie Ben McLemore behind him. Fredette did not see any playing time in the Kings 90-88 victory last night against the Denver Nuggets.

Update: Marc J. Spears of Yahoo Sports has some comments from Fredette.

Just a hunch – jimmer to the nuggets. One of the most dominant performances the Pepsi Center has seen in recent years was fredette torching Gonzaga in March 2010. What you guys in Sacramento did to Jimmer these past years was a damn shame and a piss-poor excuse for player development and you all know it. Selfish coaches and not a single leader on that team. It seems you’ve turned a corner and I wish you luck, but you will regret this some day.
