Sacramento Kings assistant coach Brendan Malone resigns

A bit of shocking news across the wire this afternoon, just hours before the Golden State Warriors and Sacramento Kings are to tip-off their preseason game as assistant coach, Brendan Malone, has resigned from his position.

Malone of course is the father of Kings head coach Michael Malone and is best known for his time alongside Hall of Fame NBA coach, Chuck Daly.

Per Jeff Zillgitt:

Kings assistant Brendan Malone, father of Kings coach Mike Malone, resigns, per news release from team.

As of right now, there’s been no mention as to why the elder Malone stepped down (sans the ‘basketball reasons’), though considering the timing, it’s incredibly odd – especially since Malone was hired just months ago. Hopefully there’s nothing too serious going on.

Chris Jent will take over the lead assistant duties for the Kings.

Per the press release:

The Sacramento Kings announced today the team has accepted the resignation of Assistant Coach Brendan Malone, effective immediately. No replacement will be made at this time and moving forward, Chris Jent will assume responsibilities as the lead assistant on Head Coach Michael Malone’s staff.
