Given the other potential suitors (say like the Miami Heat), the chances of Greg Oden signing with the Sacramento Kings was already pretty small. However, when Oden’s agent came out last week and hinted that the former number one overall pick was interested in playing for a small market team, ears perked.
Oden’s agent suggested that the one time Ohio State star wanted to avoid the spotlight and pressure of an elite team and wanted a place where he could find solid floor time without constant media scrutiny. Sacramento made sense on both accounts, but according to Yahoo Sports’ Marc J. Spears – while Sacramento remains in play – Oden’s preferred destinations are either the New Orleans Pelicans or the Miami Heat.
Free agent center Greg Oden appears most intrigued by Pelicans & Heat, source told Y! Sports. Decision still expected this week.
The interest in the Heat is obvious. Oden would be getting relatively solid playing time and would be playing for a title. Pretty hard to pass up for a guy who could be a swift wind away from never playing basketball again.
New Orleans on the other hand appears to be a team on the rise and while they’re still in a ‘rebuilding’ mode, they could find themselves battling for a low level playoff seed if everything goes their way and they would provide plenty of floor time.
That seems to leave Sacramento on the outside looking in when it comes to Oden, though, I don’t think too many hearts will be broken if the oft-injured big man signs elsewhere.
