From Larry Bird to R.C. Buford to Chris Mullin to Chris Wallace, the names dropped in the Sacramento Kings general manager search have been nothing short of impressive.
So it seems a little bit odd that former Sacramento King and current TNT basketball analyst Kenny Smith is in the running for the job – at least, so says Smith.
Per Sam Amick:
The former Kings player and TNT commentator told USA TODAY Sports on Sunday night that he has been in discussions with new owner Vivek Ranadive. Longtime general manager Geoff Petrie has been told that he will not be re-signed after his contract expires later this month, and Smith is clearly hoping to be part of the new regime.
“We’ve been talking; we’ve been talking,” Smith said. “That’s all I’m going to say.”
The always overconfident Smith doesn’t have much (read: none) front office experience though generally does seem to have the most acceptable views on players/talent evaluations on the TNT set, though, I’m not sure that’s all that difficult to do.
