Ron Burkle And Mark Mastrov In Talks To Bid On Sacramento Kings

Mayor Kevin Johnson has alluded to multiple “whale” buyers who were interested in putting forth a bid to keep the Kings in Sacramento and it appears we have some names, thanks to Aaron Bruski of Pro Basketball Talk.

According to Bruski, Ron Burkle (Co-Owner of NHL’s Pittsburgh Penguins)  and Mark Mastrov (24 Hour Fitness founder) are both in talks with the city of Sacramento to put their money on the table in hopes of keeping the Kings in Sacramento:

Sources familiar with the situation tell PBT that “mega whales” Ron Burkle and Mark Mastrov are in serious talks with the city of Sacramento to collaborate on a bid to buy the Kings and keep them in California’s capitol.

Additionally, sources report that there is no shortage of bidders as at least five groups have approached the city and have NBA-level credentials.

Bruski goes as far as to say that those in the negotiations are calling the combination a “dream team” and with no shortage of other investors potentially willing to bring in more money, Sacramento is ready for a financial fight.

The shame in all of this, big money and big names aside, one fan base is going to be left without a team barring the NBA awarding an expansion team to Seattle – which is terribly unfortunate given both fan bases are some of the best the league has to offer.
