Wait – actual basketball related news? Seems like a distant memory, doesn’t it? Not exactly the thing on the mind of King fans either, but with the NBA trade deadline just over a month away – the rumor mill is starting to get warm and few players are going to be talked about more than the Kings’ Tyreke Evans.
A restricted free agent at season end, the former Rookie of the Year will be do for a raise (assuming he doesn’t take a one year qualifying offer from Sacramento), a raise the Kings aren’t exactly too eager to give.
We’ve known that the Kings quietly put Evans on the block but now we have some clarity as to who is showing interest thanks to the Sacramento Bee’s Ailene Voisin:
But the Kings should be – and they definitely are – willing to listen. Given the inordinate number of injuries suffered by players on contending teams, a healthy Evans will generate more interest by the day.
The Memphis Grizzlies, who are aggressively attempting to shed payroll and are shopping small forward Rudy Gay, have made inquiries. The Lakers and Denver Nuggets have long been intrigued. So have the Boston Celtics.
The obvious trade here is some type of package surrounding Memphis and Rudy Gay as both Los Angeles and Boston lack assets that the Kings would want for Evans, despite his impending restricted free agency. There’s always the option for a multi-team deal, but straight up, the Kings are going to struggle to find what fans will deem fair value for Evans outside of a few select moves.
Certainly no shortage of King news on the wire lately, eh?
