At this point, it’s almost become comical – what could go wrong, has gone wrong and will go wrong as it pertains to a potential Sacramento Kings arena deal.
Now, per the Sacramento Bee, money that was donated to Mayor Kevin Johnson in efforts to keep the Kings in Sacramento was funded by…the Sacramento Kings?
As a task force formed by Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson engaged in a public relations crusade last year to develop a financing plan for a new basketball arena, its effort was funded in large part by one of the parties with whom city officials would end up negotiating: the Sacramento Kings.
That funding stemmed from an arrangement worked out by Johnson, and agreed to by the Kings, that stipulated that 10 percent of the millions of dollars in corporate sponsorships the mayor helped raise for the franchise last spring would be funneled into his Think Big committee.
The funding issue between the two sides, while possibly not the most ethical, might not normally be a huge issue but the fact that such was kept secret – not good.
There’s little to come from this in the short term, but, it’s just another black eye to an already ugly situation that doesn’t seem to have any intention of clearing itself up.
