Um, apparently I’ve been living under a rock (thankfully not a snowstorm) as I completely whiffed on the fact that according to ProBasketballDraft.com, the Sacramento Kings and J.J. Hickson were in discussions on a new contract:
The Sacramento Kings and J.J. Hickson have preliminarily discussed a contract extension. Nothing imminent according to a source.
The news broke soon after the Kings were castrated by the Mavericks, so, I was probably in the middle of cutting my wrists – thus the lack of blood flow and oxygen caused the overlooking.
As for the actual news, well – it strikes me as a bit odd. Hickson is still under contract for the 2012-2013 season if the Kings so incline to exercise his team option at just over $3.3 million. His play in Sacramento, while energized, has been sporadic in terms of results and his fit is certainly questionable fifteen games into the season. That’s not to say he can’t carve himself into a niche over time, but to already be in talks on a new contract? With Jason Thompson, who’s also a free agent after the ’12-13 season, playing so well and seemingly more likely to be locked up long term than Hickson? It just strikes me as odd timing.
If the Kings are indeed in talks with Hickson on a long-term extension, my only assumption would be that it’s in hopes of securing him on a lower than average deal, but outside of that it makes little sense to me, two months into Hickson’s Sacramento career.
