Soon as the horrific news broke about Chuck Hayes yesterday afternoon, the second thought (after the well wishing for Hayes’ health) was that of a Samuel Dalembert return. Dalembert, for the past few days, had been in serious contract negotiations with the Houston Rockets on a long term deal, however, according to David Aldridge – talks have broken down due to Sammy’s desire for the greenbacks:
Sources: Rockets, at the moment, taking a pass ($) on Dalembert, leaving return to Kings as s possibility.
An off-season that started with a multitude of possibilities for Dalembert has now shrunk to a very small handful of teams – maybe even less than that.
I can’t help but think a one year deal would be a wonderful backup scenario for the Kings, who’ve tried their best to sign a variety of free agents to one year contracts this off-season (Hayes, Jamal Crawford) in hopes of preserving financial flexibility. For Sam, a one year offer isn’t going to be the worst thing given the current market. Outside of Dwight Howard, the big man free agent crop of 2012 is very sub-par, giving Dalembert another chance to cash in, assuming he doesn’t overvalue himself one last time.
In addition to the Dalembert news, it’s also being reported that the Houston Rockets are “checking in” on Chuck Hayes, hoping to return their former big man to Clutch City when he’s medically cleared to play again.
I hope that if/when Hayes is cleared to resume his career, the Kings will have first shot at the stocky but talented Modesto product. Losing him yesterday was devastating to the current roster, a glue guy like Hayes was so badly needed for this Kings franchise.
We here at A Royal Pain wish you the most speediest of recoveries Chuck and hope to see you return in purple and black soon as possible.
