ESPN’s Marc Stein delivered the first major bit of news regarding the Sacramento Kings free agent search.
Kings source confirms Sacramento has offered four-year deal at midlevel exception ($20 million) to Chuck Hayes and optimistic he’ll accept
Ummmmm…not exactly the move many fans were hoping for.
Chuck Hayes is a nice role player, but that doesn’t warrant the type of investment the Kings just handed to him. A 6’6″ power forward/center (undersized) who plays strong defense, hits the boards and is very limited offensively. We may as well have kept Jon Brockman, who is making $1 mill a year in Milwaukee.
This type of deal will not totally hamstring the team in the long run, but it doesn’t help and the upside is low. At the moment, Hayes projects as the 4th big man behind DMC, JT and JJ Hickson. Worth 4 years, $20 million? Not a chance. It kinda smells like Mikki Moore in here, although I think Hayes has slightly more value.
The move also closes the door on any legitimate big splash. With Hayes, a re-signed Marcus Thornton and their trio of rookies, the Kings will be very close to reaching the minimum payroll figure.
