You didn’t think retaining Marcus Thornton would be easy, did you? According to SI.com and former Sacramento King beat writer Sam Amick, up to four or five teams have expressed interest in bringing the Kings gunner to their franchise:
Agent for Kings restricted free agent guard M. Thornton, Tony Dutt, says New Orleans is among four or five teams with significant interest… Kings have said it’s a major priority to retain Thornton, and he wants to stay, but we’ll see how big those offer sheets get.
With Thornton being a restricted free agent, the Kings have full right to match any offer he’s given, no matter the price.
It’ll be interesting to see the offer(s) Thornton receives (not to mention the other teams who’re interested) – but my worry right now comes from the Hornets as the LSU product and Louisiana native has a strong love for everything N’awlins. Of course, even if Marcus signed the offer sheet elsewhere, the Kings do have the right to retain him at that price – but the Kings could quickly go from suave to overpaying in the blink of an eye.
