Yahoo! Sports’ Adrian Wojnarowski is reporting tonight that the Sacramento Kings are in the lead to sign former Houston Rocket and Modesto native, Chuck Hayes:
The Sacramento Kings have emerged as a frontrunner to sign Rockets free-agent forward Chuck Hayes, league sources said. Sacramento had wanted to sign Hayes to a lucrative one-year deal to keep cap space for the summer of 2012, but could come back with the kind of multiyear offer now needed to acquire him. For Hayes, a native of nearby Modesto in Northern California, it would be a unique chance to return home.
Two interesting notes from that piece – the first being the Kings wanting to sign Hayes for one year only, with hopes of having lucrative cap space in 2012. Certainly difficult to dislike that idea as Hayes would provide solid defense for the season and not hamper any future cap plans. The second interesting note (and less likeable) being the fact that Kings would consider (at least, so says Wojo) a multi-year deal, something the majority of us might grimace at.
I really don’t have a problem with Hayes on a one year deal and/or a small financial contract for two-three years, but locking him up for multiple years with a mildly significant contract isn’t something I’m too keen on.
