Kings summer-league coach Mario Elie said the team doesn’t want Casspi to fall in love with three-pointers. Of his 672 field-goal attempts last season, 203 came from beyond the arc.
The three-point shot was very good to Casspi early in the season, something Elie called a “tease.”
“The thing about the NBA is that they figure you out,” Elie said. “They watch a lot of film, and after the All-Star break, he tended to struggle a little bit.”
Elie will emphasize in the summer league that guards get the ball to Casspi in the post if he is open.
There also is more focus on Casspi’s mid-range jump shot and drawing more fouls.
Nothing makes me happier than the Kings trying to expand Casspi’s offensive game. While I love his desire to sharp shoot the triple like an Israeli sniper, he needs to expand his overall game if he plans on having a successful NBA career.
Donte Greene has apparently been working out like a roided out Muscle Beach freak this off season and has impressed during the Summer League mini camp, so, it’ll be an interesting battle to see how comes out with the starting small forward slot come Halloween.
Casspi and the rest of the crew open their summer league this afternoon. You can catch the first game at 3pm Pacific on NBA TV.
