According to a report by Yahoo Sports, the Maloof family has decided they would like to extend Geoff Petrie’s contract which ends after this season.
The Maloofs insist they want an arena deal to stay in Sacramento, but Joe made one thing clear about the Kings’ future: Whatever instability that arises with the arena issue, he says he and his brother Gavin plan to sit down with general manager Geoff Petrie soon and begin talks on a contract extension.
“I think Geoff wants to see his work through, and for certain we want him to be our GM,” Joe Maloof said. “We really respect his ability, his talents and we want him back. And we’re sure he wants to be back. I think in the future we’ll sit down and iron it out with him.”
Within that same article, there is quite a bit of information about the Maloofs and their work with NBA Commissioner David Stern in hopes of expanding the legalities of betting on NBA games as well talk about a potential move to Vegas (by the author, not the Maloofs).
Back to the Petrie thing though – without a doubt, he’s one of the better talent evaluators in the league. Past one or two rough drafts, at worst, he’s always found a serviceable player and in most cases those players came late in the first round. But, the Kings have struggled for quite some time now on his watch…and most arguments on the situation usually end up by blaming him for poor GM’ing and not preparing for the future or blaming the Maloofs for tying his hands and preventing him from building the future due to financial concerns.
Where am I in that argument?
Not a fuckin clue.
